Behold, a day job!

Behold, a day job! This summer at nerd camp, I heard about a band called The Pipettes. I spent more time than necessary looking into the origins of their name and hoping its selection somehow involved science, since I pipette things all the time. As it turns out, the name is simply part of this 50s-British-girl-group kitschy image theyre trying to pull off, which has nothing to do with science at all. I was crushed. (The feeling lasted about two seconds. Give me some credit, people Im not that big of a nerd, although I do occasionally go OMG SCIENCE! about things.) I just shared that with you for two reasons, the first being that I already go to MIT; denying my nerdiness is futile, so I might as well be unabashedly proud of it. The second one involves what I do all this pipetting for: lets talk about my UROP! (You want some wine with that cheesy intro?) Remember this Paint-classy picture of how far I walk every day? It still applies. (The fun part comes when Im standing at the west parallel of EC, since I can see both my window at work and my window at home.) Last September, I started a UROP in the OConnor Lab. The labs a part of the chemistry department; our research, however, is centered around the natural compounds produced by the periwinkle plant C. roseus, so a major part of what we do involves techniques in molecular biology as well as biochemistry and organic chemistry. I came across the labs website last year when I was looking for a summer job, and the work they were doing sounded really interesting. Since Sarah OConnor was one of my 5.12 professors at the time, I stayed after class one day and told her what I thought. I also asked for a job. The exchange went exactly as awkwardly as it sounds. Um, I dont actually have a question about lecture today, but I was looking at the webpage for your lab and what you guys do sounds really cool. Can I have a UROP? It couldnt have been that bad, though rather than immediately turn me down (which is what I thought would happen its hard to find a UROP if you start looking too late in the year), she asked me if I was okay with starting in the fall instead. I spent my summer at CTD instead and started working with a grad student at the start of the fall term. Since last semester was my first experience with anything in a lab outside of the experiments in AP Bio, I spent most of the term learning basic lab techniques and playing around with bacteria. More than once a week, you could hear me swearing loudly at petri dishes Id inoculated with mutant strains of E.coli Express my f***ing protein! EXPRESS! Dont make me have to do this again Thisll start happening again in the spring. (Im sure everyone in the lab misses it.) My project this IAP, though, involves running kinetic reactions for twelve different analogs of one compound, secologanin, to find out whether any of these new substrates react more effectively with the enzyme strictosidine synthase (STS) than regular ol secologanin. (I referenced Wikipedia! Twice! If this were a paper for a class, Id be in hot water right now.) If youve ever taken samples while running kinetics before, you know that it essentially works like this: A three-sample example of what Ive spent the last two weeks doing at my UROP 0:00:00 Start first reaction. 0:00:30 Start second reaction. 0:01:00 Start third reaction. One hour and fifty-six minutes of downtime, during which I prepare LC-MS vials for the rest of the day, look for summer research programs my GPA is too low for me to be accepted into, and take care of the million emails Ive received from people about Wild Party or prefrosh who want to know how to get into MIT 1:57:21 Suddenly remember Im supposed to take samples of the reactions at the two-hour mark. Wonder whether Ive missed it. Panic, run to my bench, spin down samples, wait. 2:00:00 Take sample from first reaction. 2:00:30 Take sample from second reaction. 2:01:00 Take sample from third reaction. Repeat at 3, 4, and 5 hours. This is my last week working full-time, though Ill be taking a three-unit neuroanatomy class (braaaaaiiinnns, yay!) for four hours every morning next week, and then spring semester will start. (Already?! Didnt IAP start around two seconds ago?) Next week is also prod week known as hell week to anyone who has ever been involved in theater for Wild Party, so Ill be swamped with producery things until we close on the 9th. Is air made of matter? To fit into the standard definition of matter in science, air must have mass and it must take up space. You cant see or smell the air, so you may be wondering about its status. Matter is physical material, and it is the fundamental element in all of us, all of life, and all of the universe. But...air? Yes, air does have mass and does take up physical space, so, yes, air is made of  matter. Proving Air Is Matter One way to prove that air is made of matter is to blow up a balloon. Before you add air into the balloon, it is empty and shapeless. When you puff air into it, the balloon expands, so you know it is filled with something—air is taking up the space. Youll also notice that a balloon filled with air sinks to the ground. Thats because compressed air is heavier than its surroundings, so the air has mass or weight. Consider the ways you experience air. You can feel the wind and see that it exerts a force on the leaves on trees or a kite. Pressure is mass per unit volume, so if there is pressure, you know the air must have mass. If you have access to the equipment, you can weigh air. You need a vacuum pump and either a large volume of air or a sensitive scale. Weigh a container filled with air, then use the pump to remove the air. Weigh the container again and note the decrease in weight. That proves something that had mass was removed from the container. Also, you know the air you removed was taking up space. Therefore, air fits the definition of matter. Air is quite important matter, in fact. The matter in the air is what supports the enormous weight of a plane. It also holds clouds aloft. The average cloud weighs about a million pounds. If there were nothing between a cloud and the ground, it would fall. What Type of Matter Is Air? Air is an example of the type of matter known as gas. Other common forms of matter are solids and liquids. Gas is a form of matter that can change its shape and volume. Considering the air-filled balloon, you know you can squeeze the balloon to change its shape. You can compress a balloon to force the air into a smaller volume, and when you pop the balloon, the air expands to fill a larger volume. If you analyze air, it consists mostly of nitrogen and oxygen, with smaller amounts of several other gases, including argon, carbon dioxide, and neon. Water vapor is another important component of air. The Amount of Matter in Air Isnt Constant The amount of matter in a sample of air isnt constant from one place to another. The density of air depends on temperature and altitude. A liter of air from sea level contains many more gas particles than a liter of air from a mountaintop, which in turn would contain much more matter than a liter of air from the stratosphere. Air is most dense close to the surface of the Earth. At sea level, there is a large column of air pushing down on the surface, compressing the gas at the bottom and giving it a higher density and pressure. Its like diving into a pool and feeling the pressure increase as you go deeper into the water, except liquid water doesnt compress nearly as readily as gaseous air. While you cant see or taste the air, that is because as a gas, its particles are very far apart. When air is condensed into its liquid form, it becomes visible. It still doesnt have a flavor (not that you could taste liquid air without getting frostbite). Using human senses isnt a definitive test for whether something is matter or not. Empathy in the Film Beneath Hill 60 Essay In film, the emotion of empathy has the power to draw the audience further into the plot of the story. Using specific techniques to create empathy, we often notice that the movie will touch more hearts worldwide. The director of the film Beneath Hill 60 has used film techniques to ensure that the audience becomes attached to each character in a certain way. The way empathy is portrayed in this movie is by flashbacks, love and romance, death situations, and age. Woodward, also known as Woody, is the main character of this film. Throughout the text, the producers use film techniques to draw empathy from the audience towards the character. The main technique used periodically throughout the film is the flashbacks from Woodward’s past just before he signed up for the war. The producers create flashbacks to show Woodward and Marjorie’s journey of slowly falling in love with one another. Love is what brings the audience wanting Woodward to make it back from war so he can be with his soul mate. This brings the audience closer towards both, as they would be empathetic towards the situation given as there is no guarantee that Woodward would make it back home from war. Each flashback that the producers and scriptwriters from ‘Beneath Hill 60 show us is the couples love story from the start to the end. We as an audience get to see, and become attached, to how in love the two characters are. In this film text Woodward’s flashbacks show that he asks Marjorie’s father if he has permission to send letters to her. We see in this movie that he sends a jewellery box to her as a gift, made by his fellow soldier, Tiffin. This jewellery appears another two times in the movie, at the start and at the end. This jewellery box is symbolic of the horrors of war, and Tiffin trying to still find light and further his hobby in carpentry by giving his captain, Woody, a gift for his lady. Woodward was the captain of all the miners who had also enlisted into the war, and he met Tiffin at the very start. Tiffin was a young 16 year old who was not ready to join the war. As the story of the film progresses the producers use film techniques to make us feel sympathy for Tiffin. One major technique and scene in this text was when Tiffin was left behind towards the end, in a small, dark, cramped tunnel underground. He didnt have much time, and couldve been saved. The audience was made to feel attached to him at that specific moment, as the filmmakers showed him sitting there, waiting to be saved. As they were showing this, they also had Woodward sitting in the trench waiting to pull the trigger to set off the explosion that ended the war at Hill 60, while also being given an ultimatum. He knew Tiffin was down there, and had time to go and save him, but he also could not as he had everyone else’s lives on his hands. Who knew what wouldve happened if he did not pull the trigger as planned? This is the one film technique that made a massive impact on the audience as they are left with the unknown. At the end of the film there is one other major technique used, and that was when the miners had gotten back from the war and were having their picture taken. Woodward picks up the jewellery box and stares at it in remembrance of Tiffin. The viewers also notice that while the picture is being taken a fellow miner/soldier that has been traumatised from the war break down as he keeps checking for bombs and gunshots. Nuclear Weapons are explosive weapons that gain their explosive power from nuclear reactions. Nuclear weapons generate much more energy than weapons using chemical explosives such as TNT. Nuclear weapons can be in the form of aerial bombs, artillery shells, or missiles warheads. Nuclear devices can be exploded in the atmosphere or on or under a land or water surface. A nuclear explosion immediately creates a luminous fireball consisting of ionized matter. The explosion also creates a powerful blast wave. In an atmospheric explosion, the fireball rapidly rises and forms a mushroom-shaped cloud. The blast wave moves away from the fireball at supersonic speed and can demolish buildings over large areas. Heat emitted by the fireball can cause serious skin burns and even start fires from a great distance (Cimbala, 2002). The explosion also produces highly penetrating nuclear radiation that can cause serious illness or death. Radioactive matter created during the explosion can leave a region virtually uninhabitable for some time. The devastating power of nuclear weapons has twice been unleashed on mankind. On August 6, 1945, during the World War II, a United States B-29 bomber dropped a 9,000-pound (4,082-kg) nuclear device on Hiroshima, Japan. The explosion of this atomic bomb (as the weapon was called) resulted in a huge number of deaths—the exact figures are unknown, but estimates range from 68,000 to 200,000 persons. The city was largely destroyed. On August 9, a 10,000-pound (4,536-kg) nuclear device was exploded over the Japanese city of Nagasaki, with similar results (Tsipis, 2004). Five days later the Japanese government surrendered, bringing World War II to an end. The purpose of this paper is to: (1) get to know the in-depth understanding of what nuclear energy really is; (2) be aware of how nuclear weapons work and; (3) be familiar with the effects of nuclear explosions. II. Background A. Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy (also called atomic energy), results from the conversion of mass into energy according to Albert Einstein’s formula E = mc2. (This is read â€Å"E equals m c squared.† E represents energy, m mass, and c the speed of light. If the mass is measured in kilograms and the speed of light in meters per second, the result is energy in joules.) The conversion of one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of any substance into energy would produce about 9 X 1016 joules, or 25 billion kilowatt-hours, of energy (Gasteyger, 1999). Nuclear weapon is released when the particles that make up the nucleus (core) of an atom are rearranged in some manner. As the particles are rearranged, a small portion of the mass of the nucleus is converted into energy. Nuclear energy in large amounts has been produced by two processes—fission and fusion. Fission refers to the splitting (fissioning) of a large nucleus into two or more smaller ones. Fusion refers to the building up of a nucleus by combining smaller nuclei or individual protons and neutrons (Gasteyger, 1999). III. Discussion A. How nuclear weapons work? Explosive devices that utilize the fission process were originally called atomic weapons, while those that depend on fusion were known as hydrogen weapons or thermonuclear weapons. These terms are still used occasionally, but the term â€Å"nuclear weapons,† which designates both fission and fusion weapons, is used more frequently. Fission Weapons. Only certain typed of atoms have nuclei that can be readily fissioned. Of those that do have a fissionable nucleus, the two most easily produced in quantity for nuclear weapons are uranium 235 (whose nucleus contains a total of 235 protons and neutrons) and plutonium 239. In fission reaction only about 0.1 percent of the mass of the atom is converted into energy (Spector, 2004). Nevertheless, the fissioning of all the atoms in 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of either uranium 235 or plutonium 239—a chunk about the size of a golf ball—yields as much energy as would be released by 17,000 tons of TNT. When a sufficient amount of either uranium 235 or plutonium 239 is brought together, a spontaneous, self-sustaining chain reaction occurs. In a chain reaction, the splitting of atomic nuclei causes the emission of particles called neutrons that, in turn, cause other nuclei to split. The amount of uranium or plutonium required, called the critical mass, depends on the composition and shape of the material. In general, plutonium 239 has a smaller critical mass than uranium 235. The critical mass for a solid sphere of plutonium 239 is only about 35 pounds (16 kg). A fission weapon is detonated by very rapidly bringing together more than enough fissionable material to form a critical mass ( Krieger, 2001). The fission reactions proceed through the material at an uncontrolled rate, leading to the release of a tremendous amount of energy within a very short period of time—less than a millionth of a second. There are at least two basic methods used to make a fission bomb explode. In one method, used in the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, two masses of uranium 235 are driven together by a chemical explosive charge. (The two masses must be brought together quickly to prevent the material from blowing apart before most of the uranium undergoes fission. In the second method, used in the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, a number of high explosive charges are used to crush a hollow sphere of plutonium into a dense ball. A major difficulty in constructing a fission weapon lies in the preparation of a supply of fissionable material of adequate purity. Many nations possess the technical ability to develop a fission bomb, but only a few have the necessary resources (Susiluot, 2002). B. Effects of Nuclear Explosions The three effects of nuclear explosions are the blast effect; the thermal effect; and the nuclear radiation effect. Blast and thermal effects are associated with both chemical explosions and nuclear explosions, but only nuclear explosions produce nuclear radiation. The relative strength of each type of effect produced by the explosion of a nuclear weapon in the atmosphere depends on the weapon’s construction. On the average, the energy of such an explosion is 50 percent blast, 35 percent thermal, and 15 percent nuclear radiation (Tsipis, 2004). In the event of a large-scale nuclear war, the explosions produced by the detonation of hundreds or thousands of nuclear weapons would blast a large amount of soil into the air. The explosions would also start widespread fires that would send a large amount of smoke high into the atmosphere. Some scientific studies indicate that such a war could result in a phenomenon commonly referred to as nuclear winter. According to the studies, the dust and smoke might block out the sun for weeks or months, causing temperatures at the earth’s surface to fall well below normal (Smith, 1997). Reduced temperatures, together with the lack of sunlight, could kill much of the plant life that animals feed for food. The nuclear radiation resulting from a nuclear explosion is divided into two categories: (1) initial, or prompt, radiation; and (2) residual, or fallout, radiation. Prompt radiation is radiation that is emitted within one minute of the explosion. All subsequent radiation is termed fallout radiation (Schneider, 2004). IV. Conclusion In conclusion, the concept of nuclear weapons serving as a deterrent was weakened with the introduction of missiles with multiple warheads. These warheads can each be aimed at a different target and are extremely accurate. Some military planners began to speak of a â€Å"counterforce† attack—a nuclear attack directed specifically at the nuclear forces of the other country with the intention of reducing its ability to launch a retaliatory strike. Table-1 shows that the research will pursue varieties of methods to achieve different objectives. In following sections a brief explanation of research methodologies are given. (a) Describing Political-Economic Scenario and Estimating Sustainability First part of the analysis would be descriptive in nature. Data on political and economical information would be collected from secondary source and presented in meaningful way so that the overall scenarios can be analysed qualitatively. Also data collected on economic information would be placed in a statistical model to estimate future economic trend and sustainability of economic well being of the country. (b) Estimating Supply Cost and Availability The research would require knowing the cost of producing bakery yeast and ingredients in Bangladesh. To get information on cost of supplies data can either be collected form primary or secondary source. Labour market information can also be found from secondary sources stated above. The research methodology to achieve this objective would be partly descriptive and partly quantitative. Descriptive section would identify average cost of supplies and current market availability. The quantitative section will predict the trend in cost and compare it with average cost of other AB Mauri factories. (c) Measuring Impact of Economic Variables on AB Maurià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Predicted Cash Flow The economic variables that might influence the estimated manufacturing cost in Bangladeshi plant are exchange rate, inflation rate and probably the interest rate. This part of the research, would require information collected and analysed on economic variables and cost of supplies. First section would be descriptive on the banking and financial system of Bangladesh. Second section of this part would be completely quantitative: associating the findings of future economic trend and predicted cost estimates. (d) Estimate the Financial Feasibility of the New Project The final section of the study would determine the estimated production volume, cost and expected price. The estimated financial information then would be used to calculate projectà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return and Project Payback Period. The research methodology would be quantitative and would require complex financial analysis. The research report can also benefit ABF if it is planning for investing in other sector in Bangladesh. Finally, the research project model can be used for feasibility analysis for other projects even in other countries. 8. Because of being an initial feasibility research it will collect questionnaire based data. All data will be acquired from secondary sources. Therefore it seems that there are no ethical issues involved with this research project. 9.
